The basic idea behind dieting is to
reduce your calorie intake, so that your body is burning off more energy
than you are consuming. One pound of fat is the equivalent of 3,500
calories. Therefore, in order to lose a pound you need to burn off 3,500
calories.
The recommended amount of weight loss is one to two pounds a week. This is reasonable and will prevent you from starving yourself.
The most sensible way to burn off the excess calories is to calculate the
amount of calories you can consume and construct a healthy diet, and follow
a sensible exercise regime.
We all put a bit of weight on at certain times of the year, it is expected.
It is when this additional weight begins to rule your life that you need to
consider dieting.
By this I mean, would you ever refuse to leave the house because you don't
feel comfortable in any of your clothes, or even feel ashamed of going into
public? Do you feel depressed when you look in the mirror? If the answer to
these questions is yes, then you need to address the possibility of
beginning a diet.
There are many health issues that need to be addressed, such as obesity,
heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure. By carrying extra weight,
you are making your body work harder to keep you alive.
Therefore a healthy diet is required. The term 'diet' is always associated
with starvation, and diets that only allow you to eat one particular
vegetable. That is not a healthy diet. A healthy diet consists of food from
each of the food groups, yes even fat, along with a healthy exercise regime
that will help to keep the weight down. |
