If you have noticed that you are gaining
weight, it is
quite likely that there is a psychological factor behind
the weight gain.
Although it may not seem obvious at first, if you were
to sit down and examine your life, the reason behind
the weight gain may become more apparent.
There are various situations, which cause stress and
discomfort, and it is in these times that we tend to
turn to food for comfort. These situations could be
anything from the death of a relative or friend, stress
at work, it could even stem from a situation which
happened when you were a child.
When dealing with the process of weight loss, we tend not to consider these psychological factors. It is this oversight which results in the weight
staying on.
If you have tried dieting before and don't seem to have got anywhere, it is
possible that you have underlying psychological issues.
Before attempting to start another diet, you should sit
down and analyse your life. Has someone died recently? You may not have
known the person very well, but it could still have a psychological effect
on you.
Have you been under a lot of pressure at work? Have
you recently split up with a partner? The stress that
accumulates from these situations can have a traumatic effect on you. It is
likely that after experiencing one of these situations you will turn to food
for comfort.
If you cannot identify a recent effect that may link to
your weight gain, you may have to look further back.
Events such as bullying, abuse and emotional trauma, which occurred when you
were a child, may have a subconscious effect on your weight.
By identifying the trauma that is affecting you, you are
one step nearer to dealing with it.
It is a good idea to undertake some form of exercise.
There are two reasons for this. Firstly, exercise is
always recommended alongside a health balanced diet, and will aid you in
your weight loss. Secondly, it will help to relieve the stress that you are experiencing. You can focus your energy into your exercise.
It is always wise to consult a doctor or counsellor when dealing with
psychological issues. You should never attempt to tackle these issues on
your own.
